A pocket of seclusion
I’ve worked with Lewa Wilderness and the Craigs for many years now, and was delighted when Miranda Craig asked me to come on board as their safari lodge photographer for Lewa Private Wilderness.
Lewa Private Wilderness is set downriver from Lewa Wilderness, out of sight and overlooking hills. With four rooms creating an intimate base, the rolling lawns and pool beg for days spent relaxing with friends and family between game drives (or walks, or horse rides!). Dinner and lunch are set up along the long dining table, the up-close-and-personal landscape views framed by windows. Breakfast is a celebration of culinary and construction craftsmanship as a gorgeous wooden table is unfolded and extended out to seat everyone.
The Brief
Capture the feeling of privacy and comfort through a series of both images and video footage covering:
- Lodge exteriors, rooms and main areas
- Dining and service experience along with ‘living kitchen’
- Guest experiences such as game drives, horse rides, game walks and outdoor dining
Guest experiences
Getting creative in my capacity as safari lodge photographer in one of my favourite landscapes was a much-anticipated aspect of revisiting Lewa. I find the light, people and views extraordinary. During our 5-day shoot, we managed to squeeze in a sundowner setup, game walk, horse riding and did a mock setup of the fly camping.
Creating the Narrative
Showing people enjoying the space was a critical component for Miranda Simpson, the marketing and stable manager of Lewa Wilderness. Private Wilderness has both a homely and polished feel to the decor and service offerings, and is a place where people can relax and have fun. We brought in the lovely Imogen, who was working at the main lodge, to bring lifestyle scenes to life and allow us to film through her experience. Miranda organised neighbours and the Craig family to fill in where possible, culminating in an awesome Friday evening that turned rather festive.
What a treat to return to this magical place! The Craig’s dedication to conservation and hospitality is bolstered by hard work, good humour and warmth. Private Wilderness is a gorgeous addition to the legacy and will no doubt be enjoyed by many a lucky guest! I shall fondly remember my days as a safari lodge photographer, being one of its first guests, and having the lodge all to myself.
